Take off your turquoise jewelry Shake your medicine rattle Cuz you bring me sticks and stones And you bring me everything --Camper Van Beethoven, "Turquoise Jewelry"

Turquoise Many traditional sources of turquoise in the U.S. are now depleted, but there are 120 working turquoise mines in Nevada.
Did you know...?
The word turquoise means "Turkish stone" (even though turquoise did not originate there) because it arrived in Europe via a trade route running through Turkey. The pure blue stone is hard to find; mostly turquoise is veined with brown, gray or black streaks. Real turquoise should be handled with care since color can change and dull if the stone is exposed to extremes of heat, light, sweat, body oils, cosmetics and detergents.
